A Guide to Accommodation, Activities, Restaurants & Businesses in Paternoster, South Africa

General Information

Paternoster is located on the West Coast of the Western CapeSouth Africa and is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast.  Lying between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay, Paternoster is a popular tourist destination all year round.

With its white sandy beaches, rugged coastline and white-washed fishermen cottages, Paternoster gives the impression that you are in another world lost in charm and peace.  The town is known for its delicious local seafood with many commercial industries in this field including abalone, oyster and mussel farming, as well as the canning of pilchards.  A well-known delicacy is the Cape Bokkoms, a unique method of preparing and drying fish which has provided an affordable source of protein for centuries.

The area has an amazing variety of sea and wildlife as well as over 200 varying species of birds.  In Spring the region is transformed into a floral paradise as the wild flowers come into bloom attracting visitors from far and wide.  The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve covers an area of approximately 263ha along the rocky coastline, where these magnificent flowers can be viewed.  The Cape Columbine lighthouse, built in 1936 on Castle Rock, is the last manually controlled lighthouse in South Africa.

It is not just the atmosphere, seafood and wildlife which attracts tourists to Paternoster, it is the wares of the talented local artists which draw attention.  Paintings, sculptures and pottery pieces are showcased at exhibitions and in galleries to view and purchase.
